Legion of Mary

The Legion of Mary meets weekly at Holy Cross Parish. Meeting times and dates are posted in the weekly bulletin. Men and Women are welcome to join each weeks meeting.

The object of the Legion of Mary is the glory of God through the holiness of its members developed by prayer and active co-operation in Mary’s and the Church’s work. The unit of the Legion of Mary is called a praesidium, which holds a weekly meeting, where prayer is intermingled with reports and discussion.

Types of Membership

Active members and Auxiliary (praying) members.

Who may belong

Any practicing Catholic who is willing to fulfill the obligations of membership in the proper spirit. Senior members must be at least 18. Men and women, all ages, are most welcome!

Duties of Active Members

1. To attend the weekly meeting (Excusable absences are acceptable.)

2. To recite the Catena Legionis (prayers of the Legion) daily

3. To do a minimum of two hours of Apostolic work each week (Examples of some of the Legion’s active works are listed below.)

4. To follow the system of the Legion according to the Handbook

Some Types of Work Undertaken for our Parish

1. Teaching CCD and Catechesis of the Good Shepherd.

2. Leading a monthly Rosary and assisting with Mass at Avantara – Ipswich nursing home.

3. Delivering the Pilgrim Virgin statue to homes of parish members.

4. Assisting with Public Rosaries in the parish.

5. Visiting homes in the parish and residents at Avantara – Ipswich.

6. Maintaining and ordering material for the Lighthouse Catholic Media Stand and Literature Rack.

7. Maintaining the Library in the Parish Center and making books available to parishioners.

8. Working with the Parish Prayer Chain.

9. Maintaining Mary’s Garden near the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes.

10. Facilitating delivery of prayer shawls made by the Prayer Shawl Group to those in need.

Most duties rotate among the active members. All that is asked is your willingness to let Our Lady use you as you are. She needs your hands and feet, your lips and heart, your time and effort, for Legionaries are simply Mary's means of action in the world today. She will use what you give her to the best advantage.

Duties of Inactive (Auxiliary) Members

1. Praying the prayers of the Legion of Mary

2. Praying the Rosary each day.

Reasons for Joining

1. Our Lady needs you. The Legion of Mary will give you a chance to dedicate yourself to her service. By actually working for her, your love for her will be translated into action.

2. Growth in your Faith; development of the gifts of grace you received in Baptism and Confirmation.

3. The friendship of your fellow Legionaries and the friendship of those for whom you work.
